What are Eyelash Extensions?

Eyelash Extensions are: semi-permanent lashes, also known as individual eyelash extensions. The eyelashes are applied with an FDA approved adhesive with a stronger bond. Generally, a single lash is applied to each natural lash. When applied properly, neither the extension lash nor the glue should touch the eyelid. The bond is designed to last until the lashes naturally fall out, though the extensions may fall out faster if one uses oil-based eye makeup remover or rubs eyes regularly, as oil weakens the bond between the glue and the lash. Eyelash extensions create eyelashes that remain on for approximately 3-4 weeks with their natural growth and shedding cycle.

To keep the eyelashes full, one must maintain them by refilling monthly. Eyelash extensions are waterproof and give the appearance of having mascara on without the messy clumps and smudging of makeup. To keep your eyelashes maintained, one should not rub on their eyes or wear any mascara. Instead, you should use oil-free make up removal wipes, eyelid cleanser, and avoid rubbing around the eye area.

Eyelash extensions come in various lengths, colors and thicknesses, from natural Mink to silk or synthetic, natural looking, to glamorous, as well as dramatic.

The hygiene of your eyelashes

So how to wash the lashes en avoid them from falling out?
First of all, don’t be afraid, nothing bad is going to happen. And it is so easy! All you have to do is (recommended daily):

1) Splash eyes with water.

2) Dispense oil-free cleanser or baby shampoo (baby shampoo is if you have already removed eyeliner and/or mascara with oil free eye makeup remover) into your fingers.

3) Using your fingers, massage the cleanser into THE ROOT of your eyelashes.  I like to take the side of my ring finger and just agitate back and forth.  I even clean from below, keeping my eye closed and rub the root of the lashes from that angle.

4) After cleaning all along the lash line very well, splash your eyes with water until all the soap is gone.

5) Pat the skin above and below your lashes with a towel, and your lashes will air dry.

6) Enjoy how clean and nice your eyes feel!  And if there is an eyelash or 2 in the sink, don’t worry!  That was likely about to come off any moment anyway.  I would rather you have clean eyelashes than 2 more dirty ones on. We lose anywhere from 1 up to 5 eyelashes a day, we just don’t normally notice them.

7) After washing and drying your eyelashes, brush them with your eyelash brush so they stay nicely in shape.

Cleaning your lashes can just be incorporated into cleansing your face, so no additional time is needed to care for them in this way. Beyond that there are just a few points to get the most out of your eyelash extensions:

Avoid products with oil, such as lash treatments that contain oil, cleansing oils, eye makeup removers with oil, etc. This will only break down the bond of the adhesive causing your lashes to come off.

If you wear mascara, please apply it to the tips only. This way it doesn’t get clumped up into the root where the lashes are attached and then it becomes hard to remove.  And definitely avoid waterproof and water resistant mascaras.  They are not eyelash extension friendly.  Some brands that are ok with extensions: Clinique Extremely Gentle Mascara, Jane Iredale the skin care make up.

If you are going to wear eyeliner- it must NOT be water proof, water- resistant, color-stay, or gel eyeliner. Basically anything that is hard to remove is a problem because of all the important cleansing things we talked about earlier.  Some brands that are ok with extensions: Nars eyeliner pencils, most liquid eyeliners like a Clinique liquid eyeliner, Jane Iredale eyeliner and also just using a nice dark eye shadow smudged along the lash line is a gorgeous way to define the eye without worry of it causing havoc.
